1979 Scout II 88k original miles, I picked this up from the original owners grandson. It was in near perfect condition.
It came just as my Toyota was being parted and cut after a couple to many rolls on the Rubicon. I had 60's front and
rear sitting in my garage itching to be put in something.
It had the original 345ci V-8, T-19 tranny with granny and a model 20 T-Case. These combined with the built 60's would
make for a heavy but durable rock crawler.
So here it goes.
Here it was at a near complete stage. Front and rear 60's WFO Hy-Steer, 38.5's on recentered Hummers with CJ Dean centers
and PVC runflats. Suspension is 63" rear springs and 44044's front springs. Hydro Assist steering and the entire inner tub
is Rhino Lined.
This rig was wheeled by me once before deciding it was WAY TOO HEAVY for my taste. I then removed the axles replaced
with some Blazer axles and sold it to return to Toyota's. Where I belong.
Here is the Scout replacement. This fell into my lap with what was thought to be a bum motor for a very reasonable price.
After halling the Runner home on the flatbed we unloaded and took it for a drive after a little tuning. By the time we got
home from a .5 mi drive we knew it was a bum motor. The sound grew to something nasty. So that weekend the motor came out.
Here is the freashly rebuilt motor. All nice, clean and painted probably the best it will ever look.
After alot of cutting and grinding. Out with the IFS and in with a front Dana 44 with 4.56's and True-Trac. This was
a fullwidth with WFO Hy-Steer arms, 1 ton TRE's and DOM tie rods. All this spung to the rig with a set of Wrangler 4" Lifts
springs. The rear 12 bolt with 4.56's has 33 spline Moser axles with a spool and C-Clip emlinator kit all spung with 63" Chevy
springs. We installed dual cases and cross-member.
I know nice tire clearence.
Here we are with the suspension finished and being tested. With Recentered Hummer wheels built by
Fullsize 4WD we opted to run 36" GoodYear R/T II tires that are groved 110
times per tire. I came under fire for running these tires but I must say they have worked great the couple times I have had
them out. Grooving has alot to do with it.
This winter a complete lower EXO, Bumpers and interior cage will be fabbed
and installed. I will more than likely be swapping out the front springs for either Coils or a set 4" springs from out
Toyota parts section. The Wranglers were originaly used for mock up but were nice and flexy as well as stable which was important
for this build up.
